Common Myths About Couples Therapy

People First Therapy Group - Myths About Couples Therapy

If the idea of seeking couples therapy makes you uneasy, embarrassed, anxious, uncomfortable, or hesitant, you are not alone. There are many misconceptions about couples therapy that can prevent people from seeking help.

MYTH: Couples therapy is only for couples who are on the brink of divorce or as a “last resort”

This is the most common myth therapists hear. The truth is couples therapy isn’t just for those experiencing a crisis or just for those who are married. It can be beneficial for couples at any stage of their relationship, with any kind of relationship status. Whether you are facing a significant challenge, wanting to strengthen your bond, needing to work through communication issues, or wanting to learn how to be better partners, there is a place for you in couples therapy.

MYTH: Therapists take sides

This is another common misconception about couples therapy that often prevents one or both partners from seeking help. While therapists will shed light on unhelpful or harmful behavior patterns, therapists are trained to remain neutral and create a balanced relationship. Their role is to help the couple communicate and work through problems rather than siding with one individual over the other. In couples therapy the “client” is the couple, not the individual members.

MYTH: Couples therapy is a sign of weakness

The exact opposite of this is true! Couples therapy requires vulnerability and a commitment to personal and relational growth, which are signs of strength! It takes courage to acknowledge that relationships aren’t always easy, and sometimes we need help!

MYTH: Couples therapy is a one-time fix

Like most things in life, relationships evolve over time. New challenges can emerge at any stage of a relationship. Couples therapy provides insight and tools that couples can continue to use as their relationship grows and evolves. It’s not just about solving immediate issues but building skills for long-term success and satisfaction.

MYTH: Couples therapy is expensive and not covered by insurance

Therapy can sometimes come with a high price tag, but there are many options available for affordable couples therapy. Most therapists offer a sliding scale rate, and many organizations have low fee therapy options. You can also check with your insurance company about out of network reimbursement which can help alleviate some of the financial commitment!
